Community Board 1 Pushes for 20 MPH “Slow Zones” in Greenpoint & Williamsburg
By Y.M. Lowy
Brooklyn’s Community Board 1 has voted to request that the Department of Transportation designate Greenpoint and Williamsburg as 20 mph “slow zones.”
For those unfamiliar, Sammy’s Law was
named after 12-year-old Sammy Cohen-Eckstein, who tragically lost his life to a
traffic accident in 2012. The law allows neighborhoods to reduce speed limits
to 20 mph in an effort to protect pedestrians and reduce traffic fatalities,
particularly in areas near schools and senior communities.
