Chi Ossé Files Challenge Against Congressman Hakeem Jeffries
By Yisroel R.
A political shake-up is brewing in Brooklyn as City Councilman Chi Ossé, who represents parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and a section of Williamsburg, has officially filed paperwork to challenge Congressman Hakeem Jeffries in next year’s Democratic primary.
Ossé, one of the youngest members of the City Council and known for his progressive positions, recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America. He is positioning himself as a left-wing alternative to Jeffries, who currently serves as the House Minority Leader and is considered a leading candidate for Speaker if Democrats win back the House.
In his announcement, Ossé criticized the direction of national Democratic leadership, saying it has “failed to deliver a vision that we can all believe in.” His campaign comes despite reports that several progressive figures, including incoming NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, are not encouraging a challenge against Jeffries.
Jeffries’ team responded by saying they welcome the primary challenge and look forward to a “rigorous debate” about the leadership needed to deliver for Brooklyn and the country.
The race is expected to draw significant attention, not only because Jeffries is a national figure, but also because Ossé’s district includes parts of Williamsburg, an area with a diverse and growing population that is closely watching political developments.
