We regret to inform you of the passing of Reb Aryeh Ungar, a longtime Williamsburg resident and ardent Satmar Chossid who was renowned for his yiras Shomayim. He was 88 years of age.

The niftar was born in Budapest to Reb Mordechai and Toba Rivka Ungar. His maternal grandfather, Reb Yaakov Yoel Banda, was a Shochet in Budapest. Reb Aryeh was fortunate to survive the war in Budapest while losing his father and many relatives to the Nazis, ym”sh.

Following the war, the family went to Antwerp, to Bergen Belsen, and then to America, and enrolled in the Satmar cheder among the first children in the cheder.

Following his bar mitzvah, he enrolled in the Satmar Yeshiva which was then located in Knapp Mansion in Williamsburg. In those days, he related, there was no coffee in the yeshiva. “We simply sat and learned day and night,” he related. The family relates that he already knew Shas as a bachur. He authored a Sefer on the Taryag Mitzvos.

He married Sarah Gertner, the daughter of the legendary Reb Zanvil Gertner of Williamsburg.

He spent and nights learning Torah, and was vigilant about utilizing every moment for learning—even as he drove the truck for Golden Flow. When he retired, he sat and learned every waking moment.

He was a phenomenal and heartfelt ba’al tefillah, and for forty years he served as the ba’al tefillah for the Torah uTefillah minyan in Boro Park.

The family observes the way this orphan from the war rose to such greatness in Torah and yiras Shomayim.

He was spry and sharp until his last days, and left this world on Monday afternoon.

The levaya will take place at 10:00 at Kollel Be’er Menachem Kalov—the place where he sat and learned all day.

Yehi zichro baruch.
