Automated Ticketing Cameras for Double-Parked Cars

Automated Ticketing Cameras for Double-Parked Cars

A major crackdown on double parking and curb violations could come to New York City. A new state budget proposal aims to install 150 automated ticketing cameras in high-complaint areas, targeting drivers who double park, block crosswalks, or stop in restricted zones.

State Assembly Member Steven Raga is leading the $35 million push, arguing that cameras will improve enforcement where manual efforts fall short. “A lot of folks call 311, but by the time police arrive, the car is gone,” Raga explained.

Supporters believe the plan could ease congestion, much like the city’s speed and red-light cameras. But critics worry it will unfairly penalize drivers in areas with limited parking like Lee Avenue. To address concerns, the Department of Transportation backs a five-minute grace period before a ticket is issued.

The proposal is still in its early stages and needs approval before becoming law.
