A Cheaper Ride Isn’t Worth the Risk: The Growing Danger of Illegal Taxis
By Y.M. Lowy
Unlicensed taxis operating without proper TLC plates continue to pose serious risks to passengers. While some advertise slightly cheaper fares, that small savings can come with major safety concerns.
Williamsburg365 spoke with Shomrim who stressed that awareness is key. “A dollar cheaper is not worth the aggravation it’ll cost,” he said. Illegal taxis have always existed, but recently there has been a noticeable rise in organized, unlicensed car services operating openly. Some of these drivers have been reported to act aggressively, both verbally and physically, especially when disputes arise over pricing.
These illegal services often advertise in Yiddish in areas like Boro Park, Williamsburg, and Monsey, attracting riders with low prices. However, any vehicle without TLC plates has zero accountability. There is no oversight, no guaranteed safety standards, and no reliable way to resolve problems if something goes wrong.
Passengers are urged to confirm the full price of the ride before getting into the car, including any additional fees. If a driver demands more money than originally agreed upon or becomes threatening, riders should not comply and can contact Shomrim for assistance. Never pay more than the price that was quoted.
Shomrim also advises passengers to take note of a vehicle’s license plates. This is critical if something is left behind or if an issue arises during the ride. In one recent case, a passenger left a wallet behind in an illegal taxi, only to later discover the credit cards were being used. The taxi company claimed the wallet was stolen, but Shomrim’s further investigation pointed to the driver.
In another incident, a driver raised the fare upon arrival due to “hidden fees.” When the passenger refused to pay the inflated price, the driver drove off and came back 20 minutes later to angrily dump the passenger’s belongings from the trunk onto the street.
There have also been reports of lone drivers listening in on radio communications of legitimate car services and picking up passengers without being dispatched—an even more dangerous situation.
Even car services that appear well-known may sometimes send drivers without TLC plates. Passengers are strongly encouraged to request only licensed vehicles and to check for TLC plates before entering any taxi.
Licensed taxis follow strict regulations designed to protect passengers. Cutting corners for a cheaper ride simply isn’t worth the risk.
