Stop Signs Installed for Bike Lane in Response to Safety Concerns and Accidents

By Y.M. Lowy

In response to safety concerns in Williamsburg, the Department of Transportation, with the work of Councilman Lincoln Restler, has installed stop signs for cyclists along Bedford Avenue to help protect pedestrians, especially children, getting to the street safely.

Residents raised alarms after repeated near-misses, as many children exit school buses or cars and must walk across the bike lane to reach the sidewalk. The new stop signs, along with a designated pedestrian crossing zone, were added to make that passage safer.

The improvements run from Park Avenue to DeKalb Avenue, where the bike lane begins. Councilman Lincoln Restler is credited with urging the DOT to act on the issue.
