Shots Fired at Marcy & Flushing — Bullet Strikes Balchov Shul Window Minutes After Shabbos Began

At approximately 6:37 PM Friday evening, just minutes after Shabbos had begun, shots were fired at the intersection of Flushing Avenue and Marcy Avenue during an exchange between two groups.

That intersection is home to the Balchov Shul, and one bullet pierced a window of the building, as seen in the photo below. Police confirmed the Shul was not the intended target, and there is no indication of any hate-crime connection.

According to the NYPD 79th Precinct, the gunfire erupted between two groups, one of which included three individuals on Citi Bikes. Multiple rounds were fired, with one bullet striking a parked car—causing property damage—and another hitting the Balchov Shul window.

NYPD 79th Precinct officers and Williamsburg Shomrim responded quickly to the scene.
NYPD 90th Precinct Community Affairs officers also arrived immediately, helping ensure the safety and reassurance of the congregants.

One individual involved in the incident has been apprehended, and the investigation remains ongoing.

NYPD Chief Richie Taylor contacted community leader Rabbi Moishe Indig shortly after the incident to reassure him that a large police presence would remain in the area to ensure safety and calm.
Yidel Liechtenstein, liaison of the 79th Precinct, was notified immediately and worked closely with police officials and the Rabbi of the Balchov Shul to ensure clear coordination between the NYPD and community leaders.

Authorities emphasized once again that the Balchov Shul was not targeted, and NYPD confirmed the incident was not terrorism-related.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and there continues to be a strong NYPD patrol presence in the vicinity following the shooting.
