Shomrim Issues Strong Warning After Repeated Theft Attempts Targeting Check-Cashing Customers in Williamsburg

By GY

Williamsburg Shomrim is alerting the community after a series of attempted thefts using a tire-slashing tactic have been reported in Williamsburg and other neighborhoods across New York City, including Boro Park.

This marks the third incident confirmed by Shomrim in the Williamsburg area in recent weeks. In all three cases, the suspects have been unsuccessful in stealing money, but they made clear attempts to do so, prompting a strong call for community vigilance.

The suspects reportedly spend hours parked near banks or check-cashing locations, watching for individuals who cash or deposit large checks. Once a person exits with cash, the suspects follow the vehicle, often for several blocks or until the driver stops at a red light or parks.

At that point, they puncture or slash a tire, usually in a way the driver won’t notice right away. When the tire goes flat, the suspects approach the driver pretending to offer help. As soon as the driver steps out to inspect the tire, the suspects enter the vehicle, grab the cash, and flee.

In the most recent Williamsburg attempt, the suspects — including a white Dodge minivan with New Jersey license plate P82VXN and a person on a scooter — were seen following a victim from a check-cashing location on Lee Avenue. The suspects slashed the vehicle’s tire on Middletown Street between Lee and Wallabout, but fled empty-handed after being noticed.

“We want everyone to be aware that these individuals are targeting people leaving banks or check-cashing stores,” said Lemel Markowitz, Shomrim coordinator. “If you feel someone is following you — even if you have to circle the block — and you notice the same car more than once, don’t hesitate. Call 911 and Shomrim immediately.”

Shomrim confirms that all three reported incidents followed a similar pattern — with suspects waiting outside financial locations, trailing customers, and attempting to distract them by damaging their tires. While none of the attempts were successful, the group is urging the public to remain on high alert.

Residents are reminded to stay aware of their surroundings, especially when visiting banks or check-cashing stores, and to avoid leaving cash inside vehicles. Shomrim stresses the importance of reporting suspicious activity immediately and calling for help before stepping out of the car if something doesn’t feel right.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or believes they are being followed should contact the Shomrim 24-hour hotline at (718) 237-0202 and call 911.
