NYPD Appoints Chief Michael LiPetri as Interim Chief of Department
New York, NY – October 8, 2025:
Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch announced the appointment of Chief Michael LiPetri as Interim Chief of Department of the NYPD, the department’s highest-ranking uniformed position. Chief LiPetri succeeds Chief John Chell, who is retiring after 31 years of service.
Chief LiPetri, a 31-year veteran of the NYPD, currently serves as Chief of Crime Control Strategies and has been instrumental in designing and implementing the department’s precision policing plan, which has resulted in historic reductions in violent crime.
Over his decades of service, Chief LiPetri has held numerous leadership positions, including commanding officer of Transit District 32, the 101st, 79th, and 75th Precincts, and the Office of the Chief of Department.
