NYPD Announces New Leadership Appointments

By Y.M. Lowy

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch announced the appointments of John Chell as Chief of Department, Philip Rivera as Chief of Patrol, and Edward A. Thompson as Chief of Internal Affairs, effective immediately. The new leaders were sworn in during a ceremony at Times Square on New Year’s Eve, marking the beginning of a new year and new chapter for the NYPD.

“In 2025, the NYPD will build on the gains of the past year to make every neighborhood even safer,” said Commissioner Tisch. “These leaders will drive down crime, improve quality of life, and strengthen police-community partnerships.”

As Chief of Department, highest ranking uniformed officer, John Chell will oversee crime-fighting strategies and quality-of-life initiatives. Most recently, he served as Chief of Patrol and was awarded the Medal of Valor in 2000.

As Chief of Patrol, Philip Rivera will manage 15,000 officers and 3,000 civilians. He previously served as Chief of Transportation, reducing fatalities and accidents citywide.

Edward A. Thompson, as Chief of Internal Affairs, will focus on maintaining integrity and rooting out corruption. He brings decades of experience from various leadership roles within the Department.

These appointments are part of the NYPD’s ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and effective policing across the city.
