NYC Supports California in Fight Against Federal Troops
By Y.M. Lowy
New York City has joined 35 other cities across the country to support California Governor Gavin Newsom in a court fight against the federal government.
The issue is about federal troops being sent to Los Angeles to act like local police. A federal court already ruled on September 2, that this was against the law, because the military cannot be used for regular law enforcement inside the country. But the federal government wants to pause that ruling, and the cities are asking the appeals court not to allow it.
Mayor Eric Adams said New York does not need the National Guard to keep order.
“We will always fight to protect our city’s right to make the best public safety decisions for New Yorkers,” Adams said. “Already in 2025, the NYPD has safely managed over 3,200 protests without major incidents. We have the greatest police department in the world, and they are more than equipped to handle all public safety concerns that come our way, including protests. We do not need a deployment of the National Guard to our city.”
In Los Angeles, many people are scared to leave their homes, businesses have closed, and local tax money that funds schools and services has dropped.
