NYC Election Margins Closer Than Ever
By Idy Perl
After a long and dramatic election cycle Donald Trump has been named the Presidential-Elect after winning 277 electoral votes and the popular vote, with over 71 million votes that have been counted so far. This is the first time since George W. Bush in 2008 that a Republican has won the popular vote as well.
Although New York City expectedly stayed blue, the race was closer than it’s ever been in NYC. This year Harris received 67.70% of the votes, with 1.7 million votes, while Trump received an astounding 30.45% with 786,294 votes. The last few elections have had a much wider margin; in 2020 Biden received 76.19% of the vote and Trump got 22.69%, while in 2016 Hillary Clinton got 78% and Trump got only 18%. Although NYC won’t flip red anytime soon, the rising numbers are an interesting thing to keep an eye on.
Proposition 1, also known as the Equal Rights Amendment, was easily passed in New York, effectively changing the New York constitution to include various groups as protected classes.
Last night Kamala Harris canceled a scheduled speech at Howard University once the tides started turning to Trump. She is expected to call Trump later today to concede the race and will deliver her concession speech at 6pm.
