No J or M Trains at Marcy and Hewes on Five Weekends
For thousands of Williamsburg residents, the daily commute to work starts at the Marcy Avenue or Hewes Street subway stations.
On five weekends this fall, they will have to find another way to get around.
The MTA is replacing 29-year-old track switches near the Marcy Avenue station. No J or M trains will run between Myrtle Avenue-Broadway and Delancey Street-Essex Street on the weekends of October 17–18, October 24–25, and November 7, 14 and 21.
Free shuttle buses will run between Myrtle Avenue-Broadway and Delancey Street-Essex Street. The J will run only between Jamaica Center and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway, while M trains will not run in Williamsburg.
Weekday riders will feel the impact, too. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., J trains will stop at every station along the route between Marcy Avenue and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway, so midday trips will take longer. This change will remain in effect until November 20.
The switches were installed in 1997 and help trains move between tracks.
“This switch replacement is needed because these switches are 29 years old,” said Heather Ferguson, a senior vice president at New York City Transit.
The MTA says riders can use other lines, including the L at Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues, the A, C or L at Broadway Junction, and the 4, 5 or 6 for Lower Manhattan.
Regular service is expected to resume in late November
