New Hybrid-Electric Ferry Sets Sail in New York City

By Y.M. Lowy

New York City will launch a new hybrid-electric ferry for public transportation tomorrow. The Harbor Charger is the first in New York State and will run between Lower Manhattan and Governors Island. This comes just as Governors Island celebrates 20 years of being open to the public.

The ferry will depart from the Battery Maritime Building and follow the usual route to Governors Island. Riders will notice the difference right away because the Harbor Charger can travel up to 66 percent faster than the current ferries, which makes for shorter, smoother trips.
