Morning Commute Disrupted After Smoke Reported on G Train
By Y.M. Lowy
A Brooklyn-bound G train filled with smoke during the morning commute, forcing passengers to evacuate and temporarily disrupting service.
Riders described a tense scene as hazy smoke moved through the train cars, prompting some passengers to cover their mouths while crews worked to address the issue.
According to an MTA spokesperson, a preliminary review found the train struck an object on the tracks that has not yet been recovered. The impact caused a third rail contact shoe to spark, and exposed wires generated smoke that entered the interior of the train.
Passengers were safely evacuated and service was temporarily suspended while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
To help riders get around the suspension, the MTA directed passengers to alternate routes, including the B43 and B48 buses to Greenpoint and the B62 between Greenpoint Avenue and Court Square.
Service was later restored, though delays continued as trains worked to get back on schedule.
