Local Electeds Comment on Biden Passing the Torch of the Democratic Party

By Williamsburg 365 Staff

In a significant shift within the Democratic Party, President Joe Biden has announced that he will not seek re-election, passing the torch to the next generation of leaders. This historic decision has sparked reactions from local elected officials, who have shared their thoughts on Biden's legacy and the future of the party.

Governor Hochul said "Joe Biden is an American hero, a true statesman, and he'll go down in history as one of the greatest champions of working families our nation has ever known. Thank you, Joe Biden. As Democrats, our mission remains the same: doing everything in our power to defeat Donald Trump. I’m proud to stand beside Kamal Harris. She is the right candidate to unite our country, and I am confident she will deliver for New Yorkers. Let’s get to work.

Mayor Eric Adams said in an official statement: "America owes a debt of gratitude to President Joe Biden for his decades of service. He and his team took us out of COVID, stabilized the country, and restored the soul of the nation. President Biden is now again delivering for the American people by passing the torch at a critical moment, when the country needs strong leadership from a new generation. From here, the Democratic Party must continue to put working-people first and address their concerns about the cost of living, public safety, and our shared democratic values. I look forward to working with senior members of the party as we make our push towards November and ensure we address the concerns of New Yorkers and all Americans."

NY State Attorney General Letitia James wrote: "President Biden has been an incredible leader for this country, and I am profoundly grateful for all he has done to move us forward during the hardest times. Our nation is for the better because of his decades of service and commitment to uplifting every American."

Councilmember Lincoln Restler wrote: Joe Biden has been a tremendous President - who has passed transformative legislation to support working families and combat climate change. Today, he put the best interests of his country first. Thank you, Joe!"

In another post, the Councilmember wrote: "I just gave to Kamala Harris! Join me!" adding a link to the Harris campaign donation page.

This page will be updated as statements from more elected officials come in.
