Iconic Williamsburg Diner Moved Dramatically by Crane
By YS GOLD
A non-kosher diner which has been located at 225 Wythe Avenue since 1968 has been permanently moved to a nearby film studio. Built in the "railcar" style, the restaurant has previously appeared in films, but will now find a permanent home at Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
"It's kind of a monumental day for me, one of the best days I've ever had," said Sandy Stillman who has owned the establishment since 1997.
The property had been sold for development, but the community wished to preserve this piece of history. They worked for months to have it moved to the local studios, which came to fruition this past Shabbos as an enormous crane hoisted the entire shop onto a flatbed truck in the midst of Williamsburg onto new foundations at the studios where it will receive a new lease on life.
