Governor Hochul Urges New Yorkers to Make an Emergency Plan During National Preparedness Month
Governor Kathy Hochul is urging all New Yorkers to take action this September for National Preparedness Month, a nationwide initiative designed to help families and communities prepare for disasters.
This year’s theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” focuses on four essential steps: making a family emergency plan, knowing your risks, building an emergency supply kit, and taking action to be ready for emergencies.
“Keeping New York safe is my top priority – and that starts with preparedness,” said Governor Hochul. “Here in New York, we know well the importance of being ready to act when disaster strikes. That is why I’m encouraging all New Yorkers to shore up their plans and be ready for when emergencies and disasters strike.”
Key Preparedness Tips for Families:
- Create a Family Emergency Plan: Identify two meeting spots (one near your home, one outside your community), account for all household members including children, seniors, and those with special needs.
- Practice Your Plan: Make sure everyone knows what to do in different situations.
- Build an Emergency Kit: Stock food, water, medications, and other essentials for at least 10 days in case of power outages or service disruptions.
- Stay Connected: Sign up for real-time emergency alerts by texting your county or borough name to 333111 and create a contact list so your family can stay in touch during an emergency.
