Governor Hochul Announces More Subway Measures

By Y.M. Lowy

Along with more police officers in the subway, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced new steps to improve safety and security for riders.

To reduce fare evasion, the MTA will upgrade fare gates in over 40 stations and add exit gate delays at 150 stations. Over 100 subway stations will get platform edge barriers, focusing on busy stations with island platforms, to make them safer. This is due to recent incidents of people being pushed off the platform.

LED lights will also be installed in all subway stations to improve visibility and safety.

Time remains to be seen on when these measures will take place and how effective they will be, as issues like homelessness and horrific incidents continue to rise daily.
