FDNY Addresses Public Concerns Following Flatbush Blaze

By Williamsburg 365 Staff
Following a recent fire on East 38th Street in Flatbush, where frozen hydrants and icy conditions severely hampered firefighting efforts, concerns have risen among New Yorkers about the risks posed by freezing temperatures.
In response, the FDNY is highlighting its specialized thawing trucks, which are equipped with high-pressure hot water hoses to thaw frozen hydrants quickly.
When in service, the thawing trucks are operated by two firefighters at all times. These trucks use high-pressure hot water to thaw frozen hydrants, spraying steaming water down into the hydrants through specialized hoses. If the water doesn’t drain properly, the trucks are equipped with a special pump to assist with drainage.
These trucks are stationed across the five boroughs ensuring they are always ready to maintain hydrant access in harsh winter conditions.
