Enough Is Enough: Dangerous Bicyclists on Kent Avenue Are Putting Children in Danger
By Williamsburg 365 Staff
Our community has already raised concerns about dangerous bicyclists in the past, including on Bedford Avenue, where the bike lane was removed after an outcry. But the problem has not gone away. Now, the same safety issues are appearing on Kent Avenue, putting children at serious risk.
The issue isn’t the bike lanes, it’s the reckless bicyclists. In New York City, bicycles are required to follow all traffic laws, just like cars. This includes stopping for school buses with flashing red lights and remaining at least 20 feet away. Yet dash cam footage shows bikers speeding past buses while children struggle to cross the street safely.
A bus driver reported for W365 that this is happening daily during drop-offs at Kent Avenue. Two weeks ago, a child was actually hit. Parents, bus drivers, and community members are frustrated and urgently calling for enforcement.
In a neighborhood full of children, streets must be safe. The city needs to ensure that bicyclists follow the rules and that proper enforcement is in place. Residents are calling on the NYPD and DOT to immediately increase patrols, issue tickets, and hold reckless bicyclists accountable before another tragedy occurs.
