A 42-year-old man was arrested on Dec. 18 after allegedly attempting to steal copper wiring from the Shipyard at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
A security guard spotted the suspect cutting copper wiring with tools around 8 a.m. and reported the incident to police. Officers responded and took the man into custody. Authorities noted the suspect had a prior summons for burglary.
This incident followed a similar theft at the same shipyard just over a week earlier. On Dec. 10, police arrested a 38-year-old man accused of stealing $10,000 worth of copper wiring from a crane at the facility.
Burglaries in Brooklyn Navy Yard’s area have surged, according to NYPD data. As of Dec. 29, 147 burglaries were reported in 2024—a 40% increase compared to 105 during the same period in 2023.
Authorities continue to investigate the incidents.
