Construction Starts on Last Building at Domino Sugar Site

Construction has started on the last piece of land at the old Domino Sugar site. This marks the final step in a project that has been going on for 12 years.

The new building will be 545 feet tall and will sit between 1 South First Street and the old Domino Sugar Refinery on the waterfront. It will complete the work of Two Trees, the developers, on the 11-acre site, which was first approved for development in 2014.

The building will have more than 1,200 apartments. About 315 of these will be affordable. Every apartment will have a balcony, and the building will have a modern, wavy design.

The original plan had a skybridge and a taller base, but those were removed. The changes also came because a new school will not be built in the building. The design now fits better with the other buildings on the site and the neighborhood.

The changes to the final building were approved by the local community board, Brooklyn Borough President, and City Council member Lincoln Restler.
