Voters across New York’s 7th Congressional District came out today to cast their ballots in the Democratic primary for Congress.
After polls closed at 9:00 p.m., Claire Valdez was declared the winner, securing the Democratic nomination in the race for the 7th Congressional District.
Valdez defeated a four-candidate field that included Antonio Reynoso, Julie Won, and Vichal Kumar.
Valdez, an assemblymember and former union organizer, ran with strong support from the progressive and democratic socialist wing of the Democratic Party, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The race drew attention as Valdez campaigned as a progressive candidate focused on affordability, housing, labor rights, healthcare, and taking on corporate influence in politics.
The 7th District includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens, including Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Maspeth, and surrounding neighborhoods.
Valdez will now move on to the general election in November, in a district that is expected to remain heavily Democratic.
