City Launches ‘Back Home Unit’ to Assist Residents Displaced by Fires and Emergencies

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced the launch of a new “Back Home Unit,” an initiative aimed at helping residents who are displaced by fires and other emergencies return to their homes more quickly and with clearer guidance.
The new unit will operate under the Office of Housing Recovery Operations and is designed to serve as a central point of contact for affected tenants. Officials say the program will coordinate services, provide updates on building inspections, assist residents in retrieving belongings, and notify them when it is safe to return.
The initiative comes alongside the release of a “Back Home NYC” guide, which outlines available resources following a disaster, including temporary housing options, steps for replacing important documents, and information on tenant rights and landlord responsibilities. City officials also introduced an updated digital system that allows residents to track vacate orders and receive real-time updates on their building status.
According to City Hall, the program builds on the recently passed Back Home Act, legislation led by Council Members Jennifer Gutiérrez and Shekar Krishnan, aimed at improving how the city responds to residents forced out of their homes.
Mayor Mamdani said the goal is to simplify what is often a confusing and stressful process, noting that displaced residents should not have to navigate multiple agencies during an already difficult time. Housing officials added that the unit is intended to provide clearer communication and faster coordination between agencies such as the Department of Buildings, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and the Fire Department.
City officials say the new system is expected to improve response times and provide more consistent support for residents dealing with the aftermath of fires and other emergencies, as the city continues to address long-standing challenges in post-disaster housing recovery.
